Exam FAQ

A. All types of exams must be taken within six months of completing your last course. We encourage you to take some time to synthesize the information prior to taking the exam. However, you are welcome to take the exam immediately after completing your practice and observation hours if you and your Instructor Trainer feel you are ready.

A. Yes! We offer an 8 week Say Yes to Your Test Exam Prep course that is all online and done from the comfort of your own home!

A. See exam fees for more information about how much each examination costs.

A. The following exams are available in a Level 1 (Essential and Intermediate), Level 2 (Advanced), or Combined Levels 1 and 2 format:

  • Matwork
  • Reformer
  • Matwork and Reformer
  • Matwork, Reformer, Cadillac, Chair and Barrels

You can qualify to take and receive a Full Certification exam if you successfully complete an examination (or series of examinations) in Level 1 and Level 2 Matwork, Reformer, Cadillac, Chair and Barrels AND have also taken the Injuries & Special Populations course.

If you take IMP, IR or ICCB courses, you are eligible to take a Level 1 exam. If you take AM, AR or ACCB courses you are eligible for a combined Level 1 and 2 exam.

If you choose to examine at Level 1 (written and practical components) and wish to upgrade to Level 2 certification at a later date (practical component only), you will be charged a separate fee. See the exam prices for more details. If you hold a Matwork certification and want to certify in Reformer or vice versa, you must take a combined Matwork and Reformer exam so that we can test your ability to program various equipment repertoires together. You do not have to take (and pay for) two or more exams if you are planning to take more than one course. You may wait until completion of the second or final course to take a combined repertoire exam.

However, if you are planning to take multiple courses and then take a combined exam, please remember that you must take either an exam or a subsequent course within six months.

For example, if you take IMP and the course ends on March 1st, you must either take the exam for IMP or take a subsequent course on or before September 1st of the same year. If you choose to take another course, you will need to make the same choice within six months of that course date: take another course or take the exam for the previous course(s).

If you prefer to take a longer pause between courses, you may take an exam to become certified in one course only and then take other combined exams (after completing the second or subsequent courses) to become certified in all the work. In this case, separate exam fees would apply. See the exams prices for more details.

The written component must be conducted at a location where you can be monitored. This can be at a Merrithew Licensed Training Center, such as Victory Pilates, or at a library (public, college or university).

The practical component must be conducted in the presence of an Instructor Trainer at a Merrithew Licensed Training Center, such as Victory Pilates. Alternatively, the exam can be submitted by videotape. Contact the STOTT PILATES Education Department at 800-910-0001 ext. 261 or send an email to education@merrithew.com for more information about this procedure, as all videotaped exams as evaluated at STOTT PILATES headquarters in Toronto.

A. You must receive an average score of 80 percent (practical and written) and achieve a minimum score of 75 percent on each portion in order to pass. Both of these requirements must be met in order to achieve certification.

A. If you did not complete your examination within six months of taking the related course, you must complete private review hours with an Instructor Trainer to reinstate your eligibility to take the exam. Material covered will be specific to your needs to help prepare you for the exam. The number of private review hours required is based upon the course material that must be covered and the demands of the course repertoire.

The MINIMUM private session requirements are:

  • Matwork – 1 hour
  • Reformer – 1 hour
  • Matwork and Reformer – 1 to 2 hours
  • Matwork, Reformer and CCB – 2 to 3 hours

The Instructor Trainer you work with may recommend further private sessions or study as preparation.

A. If you have to take some or all of the exam again, this must take place within six months of the original exam date. This will help to ensure that the information is still relatively fresh, yet allows you time to study and improve in the necessary areas. If this time limit has passed, it is highly recommended that you book private sessions with an Instructor Trainer to review the material before taking the exam again.

If you take your exam for the first time and fail both portions, you may take the exam once again within six months. If you fail both portions the second time, you must wait another six months before taking the exam again.

If you fail one portion of the exam on the initial test, you must retake that portion within six months of the original exam. If the six-month time limit has passed, you must take both the written and practical portions of the exam again.
